Even for people who have never dealt with a certain government organization, the name "IRS" is fear-inducing. And a small business organization is protesting what it perceives as unfair proposals and an excessive number of audits.
The National Small Business Association (NSBA) is leading a charge with a new site called PreventIRSAbuse.org. Its first complaint: "Congress has approved a significant budget increase for the IRS for fiscal year 2009 - $430.3 million more than the 2008 budget, an overwhelming majority of which will expand IRS's enforcement operations."
The follow-up: "Even worse, Congress approved legislation that would track all electronic payments made to businesses through new reporting from credit and debit card companies. That same proposal will require 28 percent withholding of a company's total sales if the taxpayer identification can not be verified."
NSBA believes these changes will favor large businesses, and is hoping to gather together a large and vocal group that could oppose them. The Prevent IRS Abuse site isn't entirely functional, but the kinks should get worked out in time and some links to outside resources are already set up.
Through the site or on your own, it's also possible to write elected officials about IRS-related complaints.
