It is being reported that
PicApp
, a San Francisco-based company is offering copyright news and stock photos from large photo banks like Getty Images and Corbis for free.

The photos are displayed in a flash media file and can be embedded on any web page, just like YouTube. PicApp makes money off contextual advertising it embeds in the photos, and in turn shares it with the photo agencies. The new service is a sign of how tough things are in the stock photography business, where new and low cost competitors are emerging thick and fast, and challenging the old dogs like Getty Images.

This is a really cool opportunity! I am always looking for images that I can use, but with copyrights and stuff it gets pretty sticky. This makes it easy!

I think free photos for bloggers will specifically help bloggers cover the news more effectively.

its too expensive for journalist-bloggers to have their own people in the field, but free pictures for bloggers would be great.

it would hurt the mainstream media.

very cool. It is tough to find pictures so this should make our lives a lot easier. Feel bad for people tryin to make money selling stock photography...but times change, so they need to change too

Hi, Steven! Thank you for providing us this tip. I am a great sucker for photos--the free ones, of course. I often scour the free sites for pictures to find the right one for my articles. And I feel that you just pointed me to a "candy store." Thanks :D
